Why Did Apple Discontinue HomePod?

Apple has discontinued the original HomePod, the company’s flagship smart speaker. Although the product struggled to find an audience, the company has said that the new HomePod mini will replace it. The new speaker is expected to be announced at an upcoming Apple event. But why did Apple decide to discontinue the original HomePod?

Despite the lackluster performance of the original HomePod, there’s a chance that the new model will offer several improvements over its predecessor. Some experts expect Apple to add Bluetooth streaming, stronger voice assistant features, and possibly even lower the price. Apple’s decision to discontinue the HomePod could be the result of a change in direction.

The original HomePod was released in 2018 for $349, but it never captured the mass market. This was partly due to its expensive price and limited capabilities. It wasn’t until the HomePod mini launched last November that the speaker really captured the public’s imagination. The smaller model is cheaper, which could have helped sell more units.

Apple’s new smart home platform HomeKit is built into devices like the iPhone and Apple TV. Unlike most other smart home platforms, HomeKit is compatible with all Apple products, but lags behind Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri in functionality. Fortunately, the HomePod Mini makes up for this shortcoming by being a fantastic smart speaker as well.

Despite its limited functionality, the HomePod is better for control of your smart home than the Siri Remote on Apple TV. It is just as responsive and reliable, but it lacks a display, so you can’t view and edit HomeKit accessories or automations.

If you want to use your HomePod as speakers, you’ll need an Apple TV with 4K capability. Luckily, you can also use the HomePod Mini as a speaker in stereo if you have an Apple TV 4K. It is recommended that you use the Apple TV 4K for this purpose, as the HD version doesn’t support Dolby Atmos.
