Why Dont TVs Have Auto Brightness?

The reason most televisions don’t have automatic brightness is because the manufacturer treats it as a marketing feature, rather than an engineering feature. In fact, it’s treated as an Energy Star operating cost estimate for HDTVs. As such, it doesn’t get much engineering attention, despite the fact that it should be a basic feature. This is because most consumers don’t use this feature, so they don’t know how to use it.

One of the reasons most televisions don’t have auto brightness is that they don’t use it properly. The backlight is an entirely separate feature, dimming the entire display. You can adjust the backlight brightness manually to get the exact level of brightness you want. When it comes to day-to-day adjustments, the backlight works better. Unlike the frontlight, it is more sensitive to light, so adjusting it isn’t a good idea unless you want to recalibrate the image.

Another issue is that many televisions do not have the ability to automatically adjust the brightness of the screen. These televisions may be set on Movie Mode, or the brightness can be adjusted manually if you want to watch a movie in the dark. In addition, many manufacturers don’t provide this feature. That’s a huge oversight, because the display will be automatically brighter when the sun sets and will make the display look unappealing for some users.
