Does Apple TV Support Spatial Audio?

During WWDC 2021, Apple introduced a new feature for Apple TV: spatial audio. It works with AirPods and Beats devices. It transforms your headphones into a virtual home theater.

Spatial Audio uses accelerometers and gyroscopes to turn sounds into a 3D space. It makes you feel like you’re sitting in the middle of a soundscape, and it’s a lot more immersive than stereo. The trick is that the main audio channel is still in front of you, even as you move around.

When you’re watching a movie, music video, or other content, you can use the Siri Remote to toggle between head-tracking and fixed spatial audio. You can also check whether spatial audio is active by looking at the status bar. You’ll see three modes: Head Tracked, Center Audio on TV, and Spatialize Stereo.

You’ll need to make sure your iOS device supports Spatial Audio before you can enjoy this feature. You can do this by looking at the Status section in Control Center.

The Siri Remote also uses a touchpad and directional buttons to select your headphones. In Control Center, you’ll see a wireless headphones icon in the center of the navigation pad. To switch between head-tracking and fixed spatial audio, click the button that’s highlighted in blue.

Is Spatial Audio Available on Apple TV 4K?

Until recently, Spatial Audio has only been available on iOS devices. However, Apple is now allowing the feature to be used on Macs with an M1 chip.

The feature will be enabled on your iOS device when you install an update. Currently, only apps that support 5.1, 7.1 or Atmos will work with it.

To enable or disable Spatial Audio on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, open Settings. Find the Bluetooth icon and tap it. A full-screen overlay will display wireless headphone options.

You can also turn the feature on or off by long-pressing your home button and launching Control Center. The “Head Tracked” button will be displayed in blue.

The Spatial Audio feature uses gyroscopes and accelerometers to detect your head’s movements. This information is then incorporated into your headphones, creating a virtual surround sound experience.

The spatial audio feature will work with headphones that support Dolby Atmos. Third-party headphones won’t automatically switch the feature on, so you’ll have to make sure to turn it on. The only content that’s currently supported is Apple Music and Hulu.

Dolby Atmos is a great way to enhance the immersive audio experience of your favorite movies and television shows. The format is also available on Blu-ray discs. You can even find it on 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays.

Dolby Atmos is essentially an advanced high-dynamic range (HDR) format that brings your TV’s audio out of the box to a whole new level. This means you’ll hear more information, more height, and more room for effects to breathe.

To get the most out of Dolby Atmos, you need to have a compatible sound system and a TV that can support the format. It also helps to have an AV receiver or sound bar that can handle the format. If you aren’t sure if your device or sound system is ready for Dolby Atmos, you should contact the manufacturer.

Is Dolby Atmos Same As Spatial Audio?

Whether you’re streaming a movie or TV show, Dolby Atmos and spatial audio on Apple TV provide the immersive experience of a cinema. Dolby Atmos allows you to move around in the audio space to hear different channels coming from above, below, and all around you.

Spatial Audio, on the other hand, applies directional HRTF filters to the sound and places audio objects in three-dimensional space. The sound is then relayed to each ear so you can listen to it in a more cinematic style.

You can play Spatial Audio on your Apple TV using a compatible AV receiver or TV. You also need a set of headphones that supports Dolby Atmos. A pair of AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max is recommended.

However, some third-party headphones will not automatically switch to Dolby Atmos. You’ll need to turn on “Always On” in the settings. If you don’t have a set of headphones with gyroscopes, you can use an accelerometer in your headphones to enable Spatial Audio.

If you’re watching a film or television show on Apple Music, you can now listen to the tracks that are mixed for Dolby Atmos. These mixes are available through your TV speakers, and you’ll be able to see the actor on the screen, too.
