Is BlackBerry an Android?

As the former’s smartphone market share dwindled, Research in Motion was forced to adopt new strategies. In January 2022, BlackBerry dropped its support for its BlackBerry OS, switching its focus to enterprise software and managing Internet of Things endpoints. In the meantime, it has partnered with TCL Corporation to produce devices outside the U.S.

The first two BlackBerry devices used the BlackBerry OS (BBOS) operating system until 2012. Later, they released the Blackberry 10 platform, which allowed them to run Android applications. However, the OS was not actually part of the operating system. In 2015, BlackBerry released the BlackBerry Priv, a device that runs full Android. The phone launched with Android 5.1, and later upgraded to Android 6.0. Despite its popularity, BlackBerry’s market share has declined to only 3%.

OnwardMobility, a company founded in Texas, has launched a 5G version of the BlackBerry smartphone with Android and a physical QWERTY keyboard. However, it has since filed for bankruptcy.
